Historique :	Plusieurs recherches s'accordent à voir dans ce tableau un épisode de l'installation française en Acadie au 17e siècle, mais trop de symboles restent mystérieux pour qu'une certitude soit énoncée. Il faut mentionner par ailleurs l'étude du chanoine Collet qui croit pouvoir reconnaître le dauphin François de Valois désireux de conclure une alliance avec les Turcs et que la symbolique de ce tableau met en garde : la rivière serait le Bosphore, le renard symboliserait la ruse des Turcs ; quant à la chaîne d'or elle ferait de François de Valois un homme lige et de la France une esclave.
