Historique :	Sans datation. La dénomination bretonne mell béniget repose sur une homonymie entre mell, féminin, boule et mell, masculin, maillet, masue, masse. Mell existe sous la graphie maul dans les îles britanniques ; il désigne un objet analogue. D'après Alain Croix : nombreuses sont les querelles et les suppositions concernant cet objet ; certains y ont vu un rituel d'achèvement des vieillards chez nos ancêtres celtes ; juqu'au 19e siècle, dans le vannetais ces 'maillets bénis' étaient posés sur la tête des mourants pour les aider à passer sans trop de mal un cap difficile ; ce rite peut être rapproché des veillées réunies autour du mourant qui demandaient à des saints spécialisés une intervention dans le même sens. Deux autres mell béniget en Morbihan : l'un à Cléguérec (bois en forme de battoir) , l'autre à Carnac, au musée le Rouzic (hache-marteau perforée datant de 2000 av. J.-C.).
